Cost
The Turboant M10 Lite is probably the best cheap electric scooter on the market at the moment. It is listed for $399 on the official website but has been discounted to $299 for the better part of the last ten months, so it's a safe bet that it could stay that way. With most scooters at the price being no-brand, flimsily built scooters, the M10 Lite faces slim to no competition.
The Model One Voyager, on the other hand, is an affordable scooter with a twist to its retail model. Riders wanting a good quality scooter usually have to pre-budget to have the funds necessary to make the purchase when they're not opting for scooter financing. The Voyager, however, lifts this access barrier by offering a membership plan. This subscription-based ownership model lets members pay just $79/ a month to own the electric scooter for the duration of the subscription.
Also, like the M10 Lite electric scooter, look out for seasonal discounts on the Model One Voyager, including the running student discount code for 10% off on monthly subscription fees.
Performance
The M10 Lite, like the M10 Pro, is a single-front 350 W motor scooter with mild performance. Its performance is typical of other scooters in its class. The Unagi Model One Voyager alternatively features dual motors, each rated 250 W, and is an outlier for acceleration and hill climbing in its class.
Speed and Acceleration
The Unagi Model One Voyager, courtesy of the dual motors, will give you a fast and thrilling ride. The scooter has very quick acceleration, getting you to 15 mph in just 4.4 seconds. Additionally, you can hit the claimed top speed of 20 mph, which is perfect for bike lane riding according to set ordinances in most states in the US.
The Turboant M10 Lite electric scooter has slow acceleration, getting to 15 mph in 7.8 seconds. However, this is similar to many scooters in its price class. In addition, the top speed of 16 mph is safe for city riding and is modulated by two-speed modes: Mode 1 caps the top speed at 9 mph, while Mode 2 unlocks the top speed.
Range and Battery
The Unagi Voyager electric scooter has a marginally larger battery compared to the Turboant. It has a 360 Wh battery made with energy-dense cells that deliver enough power to sustain a maximum range of between 12 and 25 miles on a single charge. The premium cells are great for battery life. Additionally, with fast charging, you can juice up to 50% in one hour and full capacity in three hours, leaving zero downtime.
The Turboant M10 Lite has a 238 Wh battery that facilitates a tested range of 10 miles against an ideally stated 15.5 miles. For the avid commuter, this might be a bit challenging, especially given the 5-hour charge time. However, when you consider the cost, the range per dollar is above average. And for riders with longer commutes, Turboant offers the X7 and X7 Max with swappable batteries as good alternatives.
Hill Climbing
The Unagi Model One Voyager e-scooter is the uncontested lightweight king of the hills. The dual motors deliver more torque than that of scooters with a single powerful motor, allowing the Voyager to accelerate to the top of most steep inclines.
The Turboant M10 Lite electric scooter has a single small motor and a front-wheel-drive configuration, which means even less power for scaling gradients. This leaves the M10 Lite thoroughly disadvantaged when it comes to hill climbing.
Braking
Both scooters have average braking performance. They are not the fastest electric scooters in the market, but the 16.4-ft stopping distance from the M10 Lite and 17.3-ft from the Voyager are more than safe and enough for emergencies.
The Turboant M10 Lite has a front electronic brake and rear disc brake setup, while the Model One Voyager makes use of dual electronic brakes to come to a halt.
Build Quality
Turboant and Unagi are both reputed electric scooter manufacturers, and the M10 Lite and Model One Voyager are good manifestations of that reputation.
Materials and Durability
We'll start with the Model One Voyager, a material science masterpiece that's constantly referenced when highlighting the possibility of designing high-quality, low-cost PEVs. Scooters can only truly achieve a low carbon footprint if their design is durable enough not to end up in landfills every other year–and the Voyager is a stellar example of durability.
The Voyager features a carbon fiber stem, magnesium alloy handlebars, and a single-piece machined aluminum chassis. These materials have a high strength-to-weight ratio, keeping the scooter lightweight while also guaranteeing longevity.
Turboant, with a proven track record for reliability and durability, features an aluminum alloy body composition on the M10 Lite that also gives the scooter enough stamina to withstand daily use and abuse.
Aesthetics
The Unagi Voyager is the best-looking budget scooter by a margin. The electric scooter oozes class and sophistication, enough for it to be called the celebrity scooter–well, that and the fact that actual celebrities like Billie Eilish and Iggy Pop are constantly seen riding an Unagi.
The Turboant M10 Lite electric scooter is more your speed if you want to lie low, with a functional but not stand-out design. Its plain black aesthetic goes with all seasons and occasions, but if you want your scooter to command a presence, try either the cobalt blue, latte, cool mist, or matte black Voyager.
Ride Quality
The M10 Lite's ride quality is uncharacteristic of most budget scooters: It's quite comfortable. The Unagi won't float through clouds, but it holds its own on well-maintained city tracks.
Tires
The Turboant M10 Lite electric scooter downgrades from the predecessor's (M10 Pro) 10-inch air tires and now comes with 8.5-inch pneumatic tires with inner tubes. To be clear, they still get the job done. You get a cushioned ride in the absence of suspension, and they have good traction and handling.
The manufacturer suggests an ideal PSI of 40. However, note that because they have inner tubes, they are highly susceptible to punctures. This is why scooters like the Voyager and its $59 counterpart, the Unagi Model One Classic, use flat-free solid tires. And, due to their honeycomb pattern, they have some level of shock absorption.
Suspension
Neither of the electric scooters has a suspension system; however, this is typical of scooters in this class.
The Unagi's deck is long and somewhat slender, measuring 19.2 by 5.04 inches, while the M10 Lite's deck is short and somewhat wide, at 17.7 inches by 6.3 inches. Both decks comfortably fit the feet of larger adult riders and offer a healthy choice of riding stances. Additionally, the Voyager and M10 electric scooters have grippy rubber on the decks that promote stability when riding and are easier to clean than grip tape.
Portability
The Unagi Model One Voyager is the best lightweight electric scooter. It weighs just 29.6 lbs and folds down to 37.8" x 16.5" x 15". The folded dimensions allow you to store and carry the scooter without worry that it will take up too much space. It's easy to lift and to make it even more efficient to move with, you can get a carrying satchel from Unagi. And thanks to the swift folding mechanism, you can pick it up and go or hop on at a moment's notice.
The Turboant M10 Lite alternatively has a net weight of 30.86 lbs, which is only marginally heavier, but, when folded, it occupies a larger space with dimensions of 44.49" x 19.69" x 20.48". Compared to most other commuters, it is within an excellent rating for portability and has a seamless folding mechanism. However, it doesn't come close to the convenience of the Model One Voyager scooter.
Water-Resistance
Both scooters are IP-rated and can afford to get caught up in sudden light showers. The Voyager is IPX4-rated, while the Turboant M10 Lite is IP54-rated. The rating on the M10 Lite gives the electric scooter additional protection from dust. And with the strong reinforced fenders on both scooters, you can ride confidently through shallow puddles, knowing you'll not catch road spray.
App and Controls
The M10 Lite electric scooter features an updated display console from the original M10. While the curved design on the original M10 Pro was aesthetically pleasing, the control placement left you needing to take your hands off the throttle, or the safer option, come to a halt before accessing them.
The Turboant M10 Lite electric scooter has a more functional console that's smaller but features anti-glare technology, meaning it will be visible in sunlight. The buttons are within reach and intuitive to use, and the thumb throttle is ergonomically designed despite having short travel. The parenthesis symbols around the speed interestingly denote battery status, and when the last one goes red, get ready to disembark as there's not much power left.
Watch out for the cruise control function that suddenly comes on when you hold a constant speed for a few seconds. Cruise control on the M10 Lite electric scooter is only deactivated by completely letting off the throttle or holding down the brake lever, but it does not have the option of completely turning it off. The USB charging port is, however, nice to have in emergencies.
The Voyager electric scooter, on the other hand, has a basic integrated console that's easy to read and has one control button. The left handlebar has the electronic brake, while the right holds the throttle. Additionally, the scooter pairs with a companion app that adds levels of customization and gives a good overview of riding stats. Highlight functions include:
- The remaining range calculator.
- The single and dual motor riding mode switch.
- Top speed settings.
- Remote locking and unlocking.
- The subscription management interface.
Lighting
The Voyager and Turboant M10 Lite electric scooters both feature powerful headlights. The Voyager has a higher-mounted integrated headlight on the handlebars, while the Turboant M10 Lite is located higher on the stem. The Voyager has a fender-mounted tail light with a brake light function. Alternatively, the M10 scooter has two red rear lights at the tail end of either side of the deck.
Verdict
If you're an average adult under 6'2'' with a max rider weight of 220 lbs, then either of these scooters will do it. However, also consider this:
With the Turboant M10 Lite, you get less performance, especially strong resistance to hill climbing, but you do get good speed and adequate range. To make up for lackluster performance, however, the M10 Lite electric scooter excels at ride quality. Courtesy of the 8.5-inch air tires and ergonomic design, you get a very comfortable ride, with the sturdy build also guaranteeing durability. With all the mentioned features, and at $299, the scooter is quite the steal.
That said, the $79/month Unagi Voyager is the deal to beat. You get a sturdily built, aesthetic, highly portable, good-performance electric scooter. As the lightest dual-motor electric scooter, you also get unprecedented hill climbing and acceleration. Additionally, the scooter pairs with an app that gives extra convenience in operation.
And let's not forget what makes the Voyager the outright choice--Unagi's All-Access plan. Under the plan, you get extra benefits. Not to mention, you have theft and maintenance insurance and the option to upgrade to a newer model.
In the U.S., most states don't require a license. For those that do, they usually just ask for a regular driver's license or a learner's permit.
Yes, you can bring an electric scooter on a plane, but it needs to have a lithium battery smaller than 100 watt-hours, which most don't.
Manufacturers advise against riding electric scooters in the rain. The main reasons are: water can fry the electronics, make the ride dangerous, and void your warranty.
