HiboyS2 and Hiboy S2 Pro

Performance

Hiboy S2 and Hiboy S2 pro - what's the difference between the two?

Both Hiboy models may be entry-level scooters. But Hiboy S2 Pro can give you a better performance because of:

  • Larger, more powerful battery - which means -
  • More range - and-
  • Steeper hill climbs
  • Wider wheels - for a smoother ride over bumpy paving or tarmac.

If you're starting out, Hiboy S2 can be your gateway to electric scooter world. With short, urban commutes and weekend fun rides for more casual riders.

Hiboy say their affordable scooters for first time buyers are for riding with a "pure sense of fun".

Whether you're getting to lessons or lectures on time. Or the joy in avoiding typical traffic jams on the way to and from work.

image

Motor power and speed

Both Hiboy scooters are equipped with:

  • 350W of continuous motor power

-reaching-

  • 30.5 km/h (19 mph) top speed in 11 seconds
  • 24.2 km/h (15 mph) in 6.2 seconds

A performance that can easily match similar budget scooters in its class, such as the Turboant X7 Pro with identical motor power - see below.

Speed modes

Hiboy S2 offers 2 speed modes via the handlebar display or the dedicated Hiboy app. A simple double-tap will change the riding mode. Speed 1 is the default mode.

  • Speed 1 - Comfort mode ( indicated by color green) - 20.9 km/h (13 mph) max. speed
  • Speed 2 - Sport mode ( indicated by color red) - 29.9 km/h (18.6 mph) max, speed.

Cruise control

Having to keep your thumb on the throttle when riding at steady speed is never fun. As with many other scooters designed today, Hiboy have installed automatic cruise control.

It's easily turned on and off in the standard way:

  • Simply hold the throttle for 5 seconds

When the beep sounds you know your scooter will maintain its current speed, and time to ease off the thumb throttle.

image

Hill Climbs

Here's the first difference between Hiboy S2 and Hiboy S2 Pro.

Hiboy S2 can make the standard hill climb test - a 10 degree gradient - while Hiboy S2 Pro achieves a steeper incline of 15 degrees.

Real world testing finds it can take around 19 seconds to complete the climbing angle, which is 5 seconds more, for example, than Segway Ninebot MAX. Although not as fast as the 12 seconds achieved by new 'urban style and performance' scooter, Unagi Voyager - also covered in this article.

So why the difference?

The Hiboy S2 weighs 2kgs (4.4lbs) more than Hiboy S2 Pro. And you have to always consider factors such as heavier riders.

One of the biggest reasons will be battery power ...

Components

image

Battery and Range

  • Hiboy S2 comes with:
  • 36V 7.5Ah | 270Wh lithium-ion battery
  • 5 hour fast-charging time
  • Up to 27km (17.0 miles) max. range

- compared to -

  • Hiboy S2 Pro loaded with:
  • 36V 11.6Ah | 417Wh of greater battery capacity
  • Up to 40 km (25miles) extended max. range

What the higher figures mean ...

A higher number of Ah (amp-hours) means a greater amount of energy stored, which gives longer mileage and range.

The efficiency of a scooter's battery performance is often better understood by its number of Wh (watt-hours). A higher number of watts of power that can be used in one hour will also generate a longer range.

Electric scooters are also often tested under ideal conditions, such as a lighter-weight rider using the most economical mode over flat ground.

image

Tires

The difference between how a scooter performs and its ride quality, also relies on its tires.

However, you don't want the hassle of flat tires at any time, or replacing fiddly inner tubes. Least of all on your commute to and from work. Suffering a flat can be an ever-present risk with scooters riding on pneumatic tires (air-filled).

Most other budget scooters will likely be fitted with simple, solid tires.

Both Hiboy S2 and Hiboy S2 Pro have a type of solid rubber tires known as 'honeycomb', which are also a distinctive feature of Unagi electric scooters.

Honeycomb tires consist of: A continuous series of air pockets running around the edge of the entire wheel. Which gives better suspension for ride comfort than completely solid tires.

  • Hiboy S2 is fitted with standard 8.5 in diameter air filled tires - found on comparable models, also built for straightforward, urban commutes on flat sidewalks and level roads.
  • Hiboy S2 Pro comes with larger 10in diameter air filled tires - designed for greater absorption on more uneven, bumpy terrain, and giving you an improved, comfortable ride.

image

Suspension

Riding an e scooter can mean travelling over more than one type of ground surface. Even on an ordinary urban commute.

Both Hiboy S2 and Hiboy S2 Pro electric scooters are equipped with:

  • Dual, alloy-spring rear suspension. Aimed to add extra, ride quality and cushioning against sidewalk bumps and cracks.

As an entry-level e scooter, it may still be good advice to follow more level routes. From your neighborhood sidewalks and pathways to big city pavements and concrete open areas.

image

Brakes

Hiboy have given their scooters a dual braking system.

  • Front wheel - E-ABS ( Electric Anti-lock Braking) drum brake.
  • Rear wheel - Mechanical disc brake.

Both mechanical and electronic brake need to be activated at the same time for maximum response.

On a typical braking test...

  • Riding at an average commuting speed of 24.2 km/h ( 15 mph) takes 4.45 meters ( 14.6 feet) to completely stop.

Regenerative braking

Hiboy S2 Pro also gives you the added power of regenerative braking. Surplus energy is created each time you apply the brakes, which is stored in the battery.

image

Lights

A 3-way system of lights gives you the all-important high visibility to see your way ahead - and be seen by pedestrians and road users.

  • LED headlight is flush-mounted at the very top and in front of the handlebars.
  • Red tail-light, vertical reflector is positioned on the rear fender.
  • Red reflector strips are clearly visible on both front and rear wheel stems.

image

Handlebar Control

Hiboy gives newbie e scooter riders a simple to learn, and even easier to use cockpit control. At the center of a compact handlebar covered with large, dimple-textured rubber grips, sits a bright and clear LED display. Like most scooters, instant readouts show:

  • Speed
  • Rider settings
  • Battery level
  • Cruise control

Left-hand side of the handlebars is a thumb paddle to activate the front brake.

Right hand side is fitted with a manual handbrake to control the rear disc brake - and immediately below - a thumb-operated accelerator paddle. Alongside, is a manually-operated bell, which gives loud alerts when needed.

image

Build quality and load capacity

Hiboy scooters are made with 6082-T6 aviation-grade, anti-rust, aluminum alloy, which gives:

  • Both a lightweight and high-strength build for durability, and extended lifespan.
  • A rider weight limit of up to 99.8 kgs (220lbs)

Finished in a sleek, smart-looking matt-black, the Hiboy S2 definitely projects a sharp, streamlined image for a budget electric scooter.

image

Deck

Hiboy S2 is equipped with a roomy deck, covered in a high-grip, raised dimple-pattern rubber. Aimed to give you a firm-standing, yet comfortable smooth ride.

The rear fender is raised by a bracket to protect you from mud or dirt spray, and a sturdy deck-stand to the rear, left-hand side, folds invisibly away.

image

Seat option

Hiboy scooters also offer you an option to install its own detachable seat, with adjustable height. This is easily and firmly installed via an access panel, located at the rear of the deck.

image

Portability

Weighing in at 14.5 kgs (31.9lbs), the Hiboy S2 electric scooter is one of the lightest scooters out there for an easy carry between rides. Only 2.3 pounds more than Unagi Voyager.

Designed for super portability, a quick flip, folding lever unlocks the stem. The Hiboy S2 also has a hook at the handlebar rear to securely latch onto a clasp on the rear fender, reducing the scooter from:

  • Unfolded Size: 116cm (45.7in) x 42cm (17.0 in) x 120cm (47.2in)

- to an easy, hold in the hand -

  • Folded Size: 116cm (45.7in) x 42cm (17.0 in) x 49cm ( 19.3 in)

When unfolded for riding once more, the Hiboy stem mechanism firmly locks into a solid, upright position.

In today's micromobility world there will always be other scooters to check out in the same class.

Such as the Turboant X7 Pro ...

image

Turboant X7 Max

Turboant is made up of the words:

  • Turbo - referring to its range of punchy 350watt (and 450watt) motors.

- and -

  • Ant - stands for "size" and ability to fold down to super-compact, carry-size.

So, small, light and fast - the Turboant is aptly named.

Established in 2014, the Turboant brand of electric scooters continues to make regular performance ungrades to their range of budget, entry level scooters. And those built for the daily urban commute.

Including, boosting Turboant X7 Pro, with the brand's most recent release of Turboant X7 Max.

image

Performance

A key upgrade from the X7 Pro to X7 Max is in performance.

Speed and Acceleration

Turboant X7 Max is loaded with:

  • 350watt front-wheel hub, brushless motor.

which delivers a top speed of:

  • 32 km/h (20 mph) - same as X7 Pro.
  • Reaching 8 km/ h (5 mph) in around 7 seconds.

but with an increased range on a single battery charge of:

  • 52 km (32 miles) - up from the X7 Pro (48 km | 30 miles)

This means the X7 Max will give you extra travelling distance on long commutes at the same speed. You simply need to select the ride speed mode ...

Speed modes

As with similar scooters in this class, Turboant puts you in charge of how fast you want to travel. Whether on a daily work commute or for full throttle thrills.

Riding modes are all about setting your own top speed limit to suit riding conditions. The X7 Max offers 3 options:

Mode 1- Eco: 9.6 km/h (6mph). Your go-to speed for saving battery charge to achieve maximum range possible.

Mode 2- Standard: 14.5 km/h (9mph). Keeping you safely within most state speed limits for everyday urban commutes and local neighborhood journeys.

Mode 3 - Sport: 32 kmh (20mph). For leaning-in to uncapped, speed-thrill scootering.

image

Cruise control

For some riders the best electric scooter is one that doesn't need their thumb permanently on the throttle.

To access cruise control on the X7 Max you simply:

  • Wait a few seconds until your speed passes 6 km/h (3.7 mph).

then

  • Press throttle for 6 seconds.

You exit cruise control by pressing again on the throttle or using the brake lever.

image

Hill climbs

Turboant say the X7 Max can achieve a fairly steep incline of 15 per cent. Much will depend on rider weight, battery charge and ground surface.

Generally, X7 Max can make the standard 10 per cent gradient on its single, front hub motor in around 24 seconds, averaging 9.1 km/h (5.7 mph).

image

Components

Battery

The X7 Max packs a:

  • 36V 10Ah | 360 Wh lithium-ion battery

On a 6 hour single charge it gives:

  • 52 km (32 miles) upgraded range - using ECO mode at 9.6 km/h (6mph).
  • 29 kms (18 miles) average range.

Swappable battery

A first glance at the super slimline deck tells you: "removable battery". It's installed in the stem rather than underneath the deck, and upgraded on X7 Max with a stem battery lock.

A removable battery means ...

  • You can double up on your range. By simply carrying a second, fully-charged, swappable battery.

Doubling up on total, available battery life can give you twice the amount of mileage. Ideal for those longer commutes and weekend, fun trips out of town.

For a longer journey you'll definitely need bigger, plumped up tires for a comfortable, smooth ride.

image

Tires

Like the Hiboy S2 Pro, Ninebot Max and fellow Turboant X7 Pro scooter, the X7 Max is pumped up on:

  • 10in pneumatic tires - but with inner tubes.

Ride quality is given that extra cloud cushion to glide over uneven sidewalks, cracked tarmac, and other bumpy terrain. Absorbing the kinds of jolts and shudders always possible with solid tires. And without the help of added suspension.

Tire pressure

Needing to replace an inner tube while out riding might take time. That's why it's important to frequently check your tire pressure and keep at 31.9-34.8 psi (220-240 kPa).

image

Brakes

As with many other electric scooters out there in urban commuting land, Turboant X7 Max has dual brakes:

  • Front wheel - electronic brake
  • Rear wheel - mechanical disc brake
  • The X7 Max stops from 15 miles an hour in 14.7 feet.

Both electronic brake and disc brake are controlled by a large hand lever. When firmly squeezed, it can bring you to a full stop in just under 24 kms (15 feet) while riding at an average 24 km/h 15 mph

image

Lights

Lighting and visibility are one and the same. You need to clearly see your route ahead - and pedestrians need to see you.

X7 Max features:

  • 3W LED headlight - high-mounted on the stem just in front of the handlebars, and powerful enough to illuminate the way ahead.
  • Rear red reflector - doubling up as a stop warning-light when brakes are activated.

Strip reflectors are also visible on both front and rear wheel arms.

image

Handlebar Control

Cockpit control on the X7 Max is simple and straightforward.

At the center of the handlebars sits a basic LED display providing clear readouts, including:

  • Speed
  • Riding mode
  • Battery life

Left hand side - a long firm brake lever for applying both front and rear brakes, plus bell alongside.

Right hand side - a large throttle paddle plus power buttons in solid, bright orange.

Almost the entire length of the handlebar width - a compact 42 cm (16.5 in) - is covered in a firm, high-grip, pattern rubber.

Build Quality and Load Capacity

X7 Max is made from a sturdy and robust, aluminum-magnesium alloy for a lightweight and high-strength build.

It's also designed to withstand a maximum weight capacity of 125 kgs (275lbs). Ideal for heavier riders who often cannot find a scooter with a carry capacity of beyond 100 kgs (220 lbs).

image

Deck

The X7 Max deck is 49cm (19in) with an upgraded maximum width of 17cm (6.7 in) compared to 14.5 cm (5.7 in) on the X7 Pro. Which clearly offers greater, adjustable foot room. And comfortable positioning when travelling the extra range X7 Max offers.

A definite stand-out feature is removing the battery from under the deck to store in the stem.

This immediately gives you an extra deck-to-ground clearance of 13.4 cms (5.3 in) compared to the average 7.6 cm (3in) with other budget scooters. Which can be vital to avoid scrapes when crossing curbs or other stepped surfaces.

image

Portability

Every rider wants a hassle-free, quick folding and unfolding scooter. The Max 7 has a fast-release mechanism that takes a few seconds from:

  • Unfolded: 45.3 ×16.5 × 49.2 in (115 × 42.0 × 120.5 cm)

to

  • Folded: 45.3 × 16.5 × 20.1 in (1150 × 42.0 × 51.0 cm)

Plus, the deck latch simply slots via a stem hook into the fender without needing to secure to the handlebars.

Weighing in at 15.5 kg (34.2 lb), the X7 Max is 1 kg heavier than Hiboy S2 but you do have the option of removing the battery.

Specifications

Weight: 15.5 kg (34.2 lb)

Folded dimensions: 45.3 × 16.5 × 20.1 in (1150 × 42.0 × 51.0 cm)

Motor power (continuous): 350 watts

Top speed: 32 km (20 miles)

Travel Distance: 52 km (32 miles)

Battery capacity: 360Wh

Battery recharge time: 6 hours

Max rider weight: 125 kgs (275lbs)

Brake type: Front wheel - Electronic | Rear wheel - mechanical disc

Tire type: 10in air-filled, inner tube.

Built-in lights: 3w LED headlight and Rear red reflector | brake alert

Water resistance: IPX4 ( resistant to water splashes from any direction)

In a Nutshell

Turboant have introduced important performance upgrades to the X7 Max which gives entry-level riders the urban performance they often need - extended range.

A swappable battery placed in a new lockable stem gives you better security, portability, as well as added deck-to-ground clearance.

Improving on the X7 Pro, the X7 Max gives first-time riders even more flexible options in an alternative budget scooter, packing power as well as good looks.

Arguably, an alternative, good-look leader in electric scooters would have to be Unagi ...

image

Unagi Voyager

The launch of Unagi Voyager in Spring 2023 was accompanied by the tag, "Double the Range & Half the Charge Time". Perfect for going further with a busy lifestyle.

Micromobility for the urban commute continues to grow. Since 2018, the California-based Unagi has gained a reputation for an eye-catching, e scooter style makeovers. And showing how electric scooters can look for a new generation of alternative, personal transportation. Where "performance meets aesthetics."

None more so than with Voyager. A zippy upgrade to the previous Model One, improving battery charge and extending range. In a livery of 4 new uptown cool, designer colors. You're sure to stand a few inches taller astride its suave ride deck.

So how does Voyager perform as an alternative to Hiboy?

image

Performance

Speed and Acceleration

Unagi Voyager is fitted with 2 x 250w motors - one in each wheel hub. Which means its packing a punchy total of 500 watts of dual motor power. That's 43 per cent more power than the Hiboy S2. Like it's predecessor, the Model One, this gives this slinky, new scooter more reliable power to drive your daily commute, typically:

  • Maximum speed of 32 km/h (20 mph).
  • Accelerating to 24 km/h (15 mph) in around 4 seconds.

Designed for typical urban rides, and saving battery charge.

As with many of the best electric scooters, you get to "customize your ride for the speed you need". Choosing from 3 speed mode settings ( one more than Hiboy S2):

Speed Mode 1 - 14 km/h (9 mph): "Easy does it" riding on a congested route, and for first-time riders to build confidence and master rider control.

Speed Mode 2 - 19 km/h (12 mph): Ideal for the urban daily commute and the longer rides. A "balanced" throttle is on-board for maintaining a steady-pace.

Speed Mode 3 - 27 km/h (17 mph): Max speed well within most state limits when your way is clear and safe to open up the throttle.

image

Hill Climbs

Voyager's dual motors can deliver a fiesty 1000 watts max - up from the Model One's 800 watts max. Plus, an improved max torque of 32Nm compared to 26 Nm (Model One).

The extra heavy-duty torque means Voyager eats up 15-degree hill climbs.

Beating out the 10 degree inclines in 19 secs achieved by Hiboy S2 with Voyager's average hill climb of 10 per cent in around 12 seconds at nearly 17.7 km/h (11 mph).

image

Battery Charge and Travel Distance

Unagi have improved upon the Model One by giving Voyager a stepped-up:

Without adding to scooter weight the larger battery gives Voyager:

  • 12 to 25 mile range on a single charge - further than Hiboy S2 and its 30 km (18.6 miles) max. range.
  • 3 hours charging time - half the 6 hours for Hiboy S2.

Custom-built monitoring prevents any risk of overheating for reliable, low maintenance scootering on longer urban commutes or out of town rides.

image

Tires and shock absorption

Like Model One, Unagi have fitted Voyager with:

  • 7.5 inch (19 cm) (Diameter) x 1.6 in ( 4.0 cms) (Width) tires

Their distinctive look is known as "honeycomb tires".

Honeycomb tires

Unagi electric scooters are known for their honeycomb (or "air pocket") tires. A combination of air filled and solid tires.

This is a system of ribbed air pockets ("honeycombs") around the edge of the entire wheel, which gives:

  • Greater structural integrity - less tire distortion during tight maneuvers and better suspension than solid tires.
  • Lower rolling resistance - to moving forward.
  • Extended range - more battery charge stored.
  • Reduced risk of a flat.
  • Greater shock absorption - as suspension is not included on Voyager.

image

Brakes

Strong, responsive brakes are an absolute must for safe stops, wherever you ride.

Voyager is fitted with dual electronic brakes - front and rear wheel hubs. Plusa rear fender brake to give a firm assist to full stops. With no jarring wheel locks when braking on the average, flat urban route.

Typical on-road test results for Unagi:

  • 5.5 m (16.9 feet) - for both electronic and foot brake.
  • 7.7 m (25 feet) - electronic brakes only.

image

Lights

Unagi has fitted Voyager with :

  • 1.8 LED dual, flush-mounted, headlights.
  • Red LED light, low-mounted on the scooter rear fender.
  • Red "flash style" reflectors on front and rear wheel stems

It's not just at night when you need to, "always see and be seen", it's essential too for early morning, bad weather and during reduced winter daylight.

Unagi have ensured its headlight is mounted at the highest point on the stem - in front of the handlebars - for:

  • Wider illumination of the road ahead

image

Handlebar control

The Unagi name is well known for designing e scooter refinement and cool.

What could be more elegantly polished than its handlebar control center. Seamlessly formed from a single casting of magnesium alloy, one third lighter than aluminum.

Not only looking good but feeling good to touch, too. Unagi scooter design is always about rider comfort and practical efficiency at your fingertips.

Voyager sports a large display flush-mounted at the center of the handlebars.

A new Unagi control feature is:

  • Dual motor mode - a two-wheel icon on the screen (not a single icon).

At a glance you can also instantly see and control:

  • Current speed
  • Motor status
  • Distance travelled - see Smart App below
  • Battery level
  • Touch response brake paddles
  • Horn
  • LED headlight

image

Smart app

A further performance improvement is the addition of an iOS and Android smart app. This enables you to:

  • Lock and unlock scooter wheels
  • Precisely calculate remaining battery life ("Distance to Empty" feature)- by rider weight and 'ride' mode.

image

Build quality and load capacity

Frame

Unagi have given Voyager FOUR new cool-looking, color options:

  • Deep Cobalt (blue)
  • Cool Mist (green)
  • Latte (tan)
  • Matt Black

It's high-spec frame is made from carbon fiber, aluminum and magnesium alloy, which gives an impressive strength-weight ratio.

This makes the Voyager both an exceptionally light scooter but with unbreakable strength. There's even 'invisible' reinforced, frame support at typical stress points.

image

Deck

Voyager sports a slimline deck:

  • 47 cms (18.5 in) x 13.5 cms (5.5 in)

Its wide standing room is larger than a typical scooter deck. And elegantly tapered for riding comfort with a tough, rubber-grip embedded across its entire surface.

Ground clearance is 8.3 cms (3.3 ins) with left-hand side kickstand, neatly folding away when not in use.

image

Portability

Voyager weighs in at an easy, carry-in-your-hand 13.4 kgs (29.6 lbs) - compared to the 14.5 kgs (31.9lbs) of Hiboy S2. And several pounds lighter than many other commuter scooters.

image

The Unagi scooter also has a fast folding mechanism.

It's a one-flick thumb slide action, combined with a 90 degree stem angle, folding Voyager down to:

  • 91 cm (37 in) x 40 cm (16in) x 38 cm (15 in).

An easy comfortable size for carrying up stairs, escalator, and storing neatly away in your car trunk, at the office or in your home.

Specifications
