Best E-scooters of 2024
Here are the best electric scooters of 2024 based on different categories:
Unagi Model One Voyager
Unagi is perhaps one of the most legendary scooter brands, credited with introducing the first and (to date) most successful scooter membership plan. Unagi members only need to pay a monthly fee for their subscription plan that accords them ownership for the period. Under the plan, you can get the Model One Classic, which is accessible for as low as $39 a month, or the more powerful Voyager, starting from $69 a month.
Unagi Model One Voyager: The best lightweight electric scooter
The Unagi Model One Voyager is a work of art. Yes, this is about its extreme aesthetic appeal. But it’s also a marvel regarding the amount of scooter you get at just 29.6 lbs. Unagi spent 3 years researching material science to create the ultimate portable scooter that does not compromise on quality or performance–and that’s what the Unagi Voyager is.
The scooter adopts a very systematic approach to design, all geared towards keeping the weight low, performance and reliability high, and quality unquestionable. The handlebars are made of magnesium alloy that is 33% lighter than aluminum alloy found in most scooters, shedding some pounds off the total weight. Additionally, the stem is made of carbon fiber, which is, again, lightweight but very strong and durable. The rest of the chassis, primarily featuring the deck, is a single piece of machined aluminum with an embedded silicon cover that offers a sturdy base for the scooter.
The Unagi Voyager and Model One Classic are the best lightweight electric scooters with lightest dual-motor in the world. They both have dual 250 W motors–with the Voyager’s producing a peak output of 1000 W and 32 Nm in torque. The benefit of dual motors is best experienced on steep hills, challenging terrain, and in the scooter’s acceleration, which the Unagis excel in.
The 7.5-inch solid rubber tires on the Voyager are also considerate of its weight. They are hollowed out, not just to absorb track vibrations but also to slightly minimize the overall weight. They are also flat-resistant, making them great for regular commuting. Additionally, the absence of mechanical braking eliminates another potential culprit for weight–and the front and rear electronic brakes, plus friction brake serve the Voyager just fine.
The Voyager also prides itself in being a long-ranged lightweight electric scooter. Unagi uses energy-dense cells to allow for more miles per charge, thus necessitating fewer recharges and ultimately delivering the best electric scooter battery life. The energy-dense cells are also weight-conservative, and riders can expect a range of 25 miles.
However, weight aside, the scooter also has a very efficient one-click folding mechanism that locks the scooter down in an instant. The compact folded dimensions of 37.8 inches x 16.5 inches x 15 inches further confirm the Voyager as the best foldable electric scooter. And Unagi even offers a carry satchel to make it that much easier to move with.
Reasons not to get the Unagi Model One Voyager
- If you’re looking for more power.
- If portability is not a concern for you.
Segway Ninebot Max G2
The Segway Ninebot Max G2 is an $899 electric scooter released in 2023 as an upgrade to the original Segway Ninebot Max G30 that was the industry benchmark for range and reliability. With the design upgrades to the Max G2, this Ninebot becomes the best electric scooter for 2024, and we’ll see why.
Segway Ninebot Max G2: The best electric scooter overall
The Segway Ninebot Max G2 embodies the convenience that has popularized electric scooters in all aspects. First, the scooter is very affordable, given its performance and specifications. It delivers a commuter-appropriate speed, acceleration, and hill-climbing, maxing out at around 21 miles per hour top speed.
The other highlight, like the original Max G30, is the incredible range for a commuter its size. Segway designed the Max G2 for range efficiency via their proprietary RideyLONG technology that leverages a high-performance brushless motor and low rolling resistance tires to get 26.6 miles of tested range in max performance settings.
Additionally, the scooter is the most comfortable budget, courtesy of the quality front hydraulic suspension and adjustable dual rear spring shocks that work in tandem with the plush 10-inch by 2.5-inch tubeless, self-sealing pneumatic tires. The suspension is the best on a scooter in this class, with most electric scooters under $1000 pretty much foregoing shocks.
The Max G2 electric scooter has an adult-friendly geometry. It is the best electric scooter for teenagers and the best electric scooter for adults, thanks to the large 19.8 by 7.3 inch comfortable, rubber-covered deck, the 41-inch tall scooter height, wide ergonomic handlebars, 265 lb rider weight capacity, and the G2's agile handling.
The scooter has other neat design integrations that make it the go-to scooter for anyone in the market. The features include high-integrated turn signals that have an audible reminder to turn off, traction control that’s perfect for offroad and slippery paths, a built-in charger that does away with the need for a brick, a loud horn, large and bright tail light, and a smart BMS that can set the upper limit for charging for longer battery life.
Finally, the Segway Ninebot Max G2 is the first electric scooter in the world with the ‘Apple Find My’ feature that lets iOS users locate the scooter as they would any other Apple device in the ecosystem.
Reasons not to buy the Segway Ninebot Max G2
- The scooter’s 36 V system means less efficiency and a power fall-off at the end of the battery, delivering speeds as low as 10 mph.
- Mellow braking from the front drum brake plus rear electronic braking setup.
We have a curated list of ‘best Segway Ninebot Max alternatives’ if you’re unsatisfied with the G2.
EMOVE Cruiser S
The EMOVE Cruiser is easily one of the most recognizable electric scooters in the market, with over 50,000 units sold since the inception of the first Cruiser, the EMOVE Cruiser 2019. VORO Motors has since released two other versions–the 2020 Cruiser, and the new 2023 EMOVE Cruiser S. Regardless of the variant, the Cruisers are known for one thing, their unmatched range offering.
EMOVE Cruiser S: The best electric scooter for commuting
The EMOVE Cruiser S and the other two Cruisers have all the hallmarks of best electric scooter for commuting. However, it’s their incredible range-to-weight ratio that sets them apart. The Cruiser S is a 52 lbs electric scooter with a claimed range of 60 miles in ideal conditions and a tested range of 44 to 48 miles by different independent reviewers. At $1399, the range per dollar is also the highest of any electric scooter. For perspective, the lightest scooter with a longer range than the Cruiser S is the 100 lb NAMI Burn-E 2 with a 49.1 mile tested range, while the Kaabo Wolf King GT is the cheapest scooter of the ones that go further than the Cruiser S, with a $3195 retail price and a 55-mile range.
Range aside, the other performance numbers also rally behind the Cruiser S as the ultimate commuter. The scooter has a 52 V, 1000 W rear motor with a 25 A sinewave controller (uncommon in this price class) that delivers a smooth and reliable power train. VORO also upgraded the throttle to a more ergonomic thumb design that lessens fatigue on longer journeys. Additionally, the scooter reaches a tested max speed of 33 mph and accelerates to 30 mph in about 17 seconds, guaranteeing its efficiency in getting you to your destination fast. It also has good hill climbing, capable of conquering most city hills.
The ride quality on those long rides is certainly one of the best. The scooter has a front and rear suspension with just enough flex for regular commuting. It is further equipped with large 10-inch, tubeless, self-sealing tires to safeguard riders against pinch and puncture flats for uninterrupted riding. The Cruiser S, additionally, has an ultra-roomy, surfer board style deck measuring 23 inches by 7.75 inches, which is more than enough to adopt a comfortable stance. And if you prefer riding seated, the Cruiser S accommodates a seat attachment.
The Cruiser S caters to safety with dual semi-hydraulic discs that deliver a short stopping distance of 10.1 ft from a speed of 15 mph. It has all-around lighting to ensure you stay visible on night rides, and if you are one to ride throughout the year, the high IPX6 rating should come in handy. Finally, a commuter needs to be portable, and while the 52 lb weight is a little on the higher side, the Cruiser S makes up for it with a telescopic stem, folding handlebars, a great locking mechanism, and an optional grab handle to help lift the scooter more comfortably.
Reasons not to buy the EMOVE Cruiser S
- If you simply want a different scooter, we have some EMOVE Cruiser S alternatives for you.
- At 38.5 inches, the handlebars sit shorter than ideal, and the short 4.5-inch clearance is challenging when going over large obstacles.
- The tail light doesn’t blink when braking, and the low position of the front light might necessitate aftermarket lighting.
Segway Ninebot E2
The Segway Ninebot E2 and the Ninebot E2 Plus are two of the best affordable scooters in the market, scoring high on quality, reliability, and affordability. They belong to the most saturated class of e-scooters, but we’ll see why the Ninebot is one of the few scooters worth considering.
Segway Ninebot E2: The best budget electric scooter
Most manufacturers trying to make a quick buck from the scooter wave, as with most viral and trendy products, tend to go for the low-hanging fruit–the budget class. Therefore, any internet search for ‘best budget electric scooters’ or ‘cheapest electric scooters’ will flood you with hundreds of options. However, going for those generic scooters comes at a cost: you might be paying for a non-existent product, the product’s quality cannot be vouched for, hard-to-reach customer support or none at all, unavailability of parts, their short life span, and poor unreliable performance.
Segway is one of the most reliable electric scooter brands, and even in the budget class, the scooters don’t feel cheap. The Segway Ninebot E2 is sleek-looking, with a unique and appealing design. It is also outfitted with quality parts like the large central display that’s visible in sunlight, a generous rubber mat over the deck, a pleasant bell for pedestrians, and chunky, textured grips that cover the handlebar ends.
Performance-wise, it is not the fastest or the most powerful, which are expected tradeoffs. However, it is convenient. You get a max speed of 12.5 mph and a tested range of 10.3 miles in top performance mode. The front 250 W motor, however, does not guarantee to get you to the top of hilly inclines–you’d have to upgrade to a slightly more powerful scooter for that.
The ride quality is as expected–adequate. However, the 8.1-inch tires are hollowed to absorb some of the shocks experienced when riding. They are solid, so you never have to worry about flats. The deck is not the largest but is sufficient for steering. For safety, the Ninebot E2 electric scooter relies on a rear drum brake and front electronic brake, as well as a good lighting setup that includes a high-mounted headlight and a rear light that blinks when braking. The scooter is also IPX4 protected against sudden unexpected rain showers.
The Segway Ninebot Max E2 is the best low budget electric scooter under 300$, not just because of the offerings but also because in the event of issues, Segway has a proven track record in responding to rider problems. Additionally, even at this budget, the durability and reliability remain uncompromised. Therefore, if you’re a regular commuter or have a school-goer you’d like to get a scooter, the Ninebot E2 more than suffices.
Reasons not to buy the Segway E2 electric scooter
- If you want more power or a better ride quality.
- If you commute through challenging terrain, like hilly areas or poorly maintained roads.
Kaabo Wolf King GTR
The Wolf King GTR is the 4th generation iteration of Kaabo’s performance scooters, succeeding the Wolf Warrior 11+, the Wolf King, and the Wolf King GT Pro. The 2023 Wolf King GTR made quite some noise when it was first launched, setting performance records and winning the hearts of many in the riding community.
Kaabo Wolf King GTR: The best electric scooter for heavy adults
The Wolf King GTR qualifies for this shortlist as the best scooter for heavier adults, specifically, those who crave performance. Many scooters are rated for high payload capacities (over 250 lbs), but few deliver on performance with a bigger rider behind the cockpit. The Wolf King GTR supports a rider weight limit of up to 330 lbs and does not lose power even with heavier adults, and here's why.
The Wolf King GTR uniquely features a 2419 Wh removable battery that caters to the added power needs of heavier riders. In addition, it has a bulletproof build that holds up with heavier individuals, even those preferring aggressive riding styles. And with a 13,440 W peak power, there’s no questioning the scooter's capabilities. It has one of the highest tested top speeds, at 65.8 mph, and it is expected that even the heaviest rider will at least reach 60 mph. The acceleration is also insane, with an 18.7 seconds to 60 mph. Moreover, if you want even more power, clicking the throttle at 60 mph briefly delivers extra current to the motors.
Now, many heavy individuals struggle to find motorized scooters that can carry them on hilly and off-road terrain. In this regard, the King GTR stands out as the best off road electric scooter for heavy adults. The torquey motors accelerate the scooter from the base of your incline to the top regardless of your rider weight. Additionally, it has the highest ground clearance on a scooter–9.3 inches, meaning it’ll never bottom out.
The scooter is ergonomically designed to accommodate bigger riders. The 29.5-inch wide handlebars are optimal for bigger adults, and the 38.5-inch height allows for the tactical tucked stance most riders adopt when cornering or tackling challenging terrain. The huge 22 by 9.3-inch deck also allows riders with large feet to comfortably shuffle between foot placements. Ride comfort is further ensured by the scooter’s large 12-inch tubeless hybrid tires, the motorcycle-style front suspension that’s adjustable for preload, and a super plush rear spring suspension that’s adjustable for rebound.
The Wolf King GTR is also easy to ride. It has dual stems that guarantee stability at speed. In addition, the trigger throttle paired with the 160 A sinewave controller guarantees a smooth and controlled ride. And thanks to traction control that cuts power to the front motor when excess wheel spin is detected, you can safely navigate almost any condition on the King GTR.
Reasons not to buy the Kaabo Wolf King GTR
- It's a heavy scooter at 138 lbs; therefore a bit challenging to move when not riding. It’s also quite bulky and requires special storage considerations.
- It costs $3995, which is a significant investment.
NIU KQi2 Pro
The NIU KQi2 Pro electric scooter is one of NIU’s five commuters and by far the best value for money (easily the best scooter under 1000 dollars). Despite being a 2022 release, the KQi2 continues to appear on most recommendation lists because it is simply one of the best scooters there is. Two years after their first scooter release, we now see why NIU was as confident as to issue a 2-year warranty for their scooters, covering parts like batteries, controllers, and the dash.
NIU KQi2 Pro: The best electric scooter for students
Scooters have become a common means of transportation on campuses. They get the job done and done well. The list of requirements for students of their scooters is not as complex as commuting adults–most will go with what fits the budget. That said, with the number of options in the market today, you can go cheap and still demand quality. Under 500$, there’s no better electric scooter option for students than the NIU KQi2 Pro–and currently, you can find it listed for as low as $399. Here’s why we recommend it.
The first reason is the scooter's portability. The NIU KQi2 Pro kick scooter is a 40-lb scooter, making it an easy-to-carry package. In addition, it folds down compactly and can be carried into classes or dorm rooms when not in use. The folding mechanism is quick and easy to deploy, and it has a double safety catch to ensure the stem stays up when in use. It latches to the deck firmly when folded, allowing for easy transportation.
Next, we have performance. Students don’t require obscene power on their scooters. However, they do require reliability, which the KQi2 Pro offers in heaps. The scooter has a 365 Wh battery, responsible for a 15-mile journey on a single charge. Additionally, you have a single rear 300 W motor that, though not aggressive, will power through campus grounds and a little site-seeing on weekends. You can ride the NIU KQi2 Pro kick scooter to an 18 mph max speed, which is more than many scooters in this class.
The ride comfort is the other big selling point. The scooter is an anomaly in its class, courtesy of the 10-inch tubeless tires. The tires deliver a smoother ride than most and are impervious to pinch flats that make up the majority of tire punctures. You get tall and wide handlebars that allow for comfortable riding alongside the sizable 19 by 5.1-inch deck. Additionally, you get a grip tape cover for stability, and NIU even throws in two spares.
For safety, the scooter has good stopping power from the front drum brake and rear regen. You can adjust the regen as well as acceleration intensity on the app to allow for a more customized ride experience. Speaking of which, new riders need to go through a tutorial on the app before they can ride the scooter at higher speeds. You also get an always-on adjustable halo light top and front and a highly visible tail/brake light for night riding. Lastly, it has an IP54 rating against water penetration.
Reasons not to buy the NIU KQi2 Pro
- The scooter has no zero-start function.
- The app needs to stay open to track riding stats.
EMOVE Roadrunner Pro
The EMOVE Roadrunner series of scooters by VORO has become the industry benchmark for seated e-scooters. They provide a good balance of cost, performance, ride and build quality, and convenience. The Original Roadrunner and the Roadrunner V2 were lower-powered dual motor commuters, with top speeds of 35 mph. The Pro, however, is the performance version, with upgrades all around.
EMOVE Roadrunner Pro: Best seated electric scooter
Electric scooters with seats have become more commonplace today compared to two years ago when we first experienced the original EMOVE Roadrunner. However, the majority of these scooters are not purpose-built with a seat; rather, the seat comes as an attachment. If you’re not committed to the idea of a seated e-scooter, they work just fine. But we have to point out that purpose-built seated scooters like the Roadrunners deliver a more elevated seated riding experience compared to those with seat attachment options.
The EMOVE Roadrunner is a $2395 scooter and the best electric scooter with a seat. The Roadrunner Pro features a large, thick memory foam seat: 20.5 inches x 7 inches x 30.5 inches (LxWxH). The memory foam makes for a very comfortable sitting experience. What’s more, the outer fabric used by VORO is wear and heat-resistant for longevity and helping you stay cool in the sun. The seat is positioned 29 inches from the ground, which means a comfortable riding experience for the average adult.
Along the chassis, you have foot pegs on either side that are optimized for seated riding. Having your feet planted wide on the pegs is great for ride comfort, and when leaning into corners. Additionally, the super wide 31-inch handlebars are adjustable via spacers and you can position them to lean more towards or away from you. Their ideal width subsequently allows for enhanced stability and control. On either end, you have an ergonomic twist grip throttle with rapid power delivery, tying together the ride experience.
The build quality is remarkable, with a robust bike frame. The Roadrunner Pro further features huge 14-inch tubeless tires that greatly enhance stability. However, due to the rear-adjacent seat position, the front wheel experiences a little excess wheel spin so riders need to lean into the handlebars to improve traction. That said, the tires are road-optimized but can go off-road, especially thanks to the front hydraulic fork suspension and the rear dual spring setup.
Lastly, you get beast-mode performance. The Roadrunner Pro’s dual 60V, 2000 W motors with dual 45 amp sinewave controllers produce a peak power of 6000 W. The power can be felt in the scooter’s rapid acceleration and best-in-class hill climbing. The Roadrunner Pro, additionally, has a top speed of 55 mph and an actual range of 32 to 34 miles courtesy of the removable 1800 Wh battery with LG 21700 cells. With the removable battery, you can also potentially double your range. For braking, the full ZOOM hydraulic brakes deliver a stopping distance of 10.4 ft from a speed of 15 mph.
Reasons not to buy the EMOVE Roadrunner Pro
- If you don’t like riding your scooter seated
- If you want a lighter seated scooter, as the Roadrunner Pro weighs 114 lbs
NAMI BURN-E 2 Max
Michael Sha, the brains behind the NAMI brand, has carved out a niche for himself, which is high-performance, excellent quality, exotic scooters. Currently, NAMI has four beasts in its lineup: the original NAMI BURN-E, the performance downgrade–the NAMI BURN-E 2, the upgraded NAMI BURN-E 2 Max, and the budget Klima Max.
NAMI BURN-E 2 Max: The best electric scooter for hill climbing
The $3999 NAMI BURN-E 2 Max is a 2023 release by NAMI and a sequel to the record-breaking NAMI BURN-E. This extreme performance version is better than the original in all ways, from the double-boxed packaging it arrives in to design specs like wider bars, and the included steering damper. That said, the one thing all NAMIs do well is climb hills–the competition is pretty much between them and the Kaabo Wolf Kings, and the NAMIs steal the show.
The NAMI BURN-E 2 Max is equipped with dual 72 V, 1500 W motors that have a ton of power. On a 200 ft, 10% grade hill, independent testers found the BURN-E 2 Max to reach the top in just 6.3 seconds, maintaining an average speed of 21.2 mph. For perspective, the best commuter scooters achieved the following times with all factors held constant: the Apollo Air–18.6 seconds, the NIU KQi2 Pro–20.3 seconds, and the Segway Ninebot Max, 17 seconds.
The electric scooter comes with stock 11-inch, tubeless CST tires. However, riders noted that these become wobbly at speed, a situation most people remedied by switching them for PMT tires that offer better stability. Additionally, you get 165 mm adjustable hydraulic coil suspension front and rear. For fast riding, set the shocks to slow rebound settings for a stiffer more stable feel, and for offroading, adjust them to fast rebound to neutralize the shock from track obstacles.
The NAMI BURN-E 2 Max is a fast scooter with tested speedometer readings of 55 to 60 mph. The scooter also comes with a large 2304 Wh battery, with branded energy-dense cells from either Panasonic, LG, or Samsung. This massive battery means sufficient power if you’ll mainly be tackling challenging hilly or off-road terrain. NAMIs also really excel in acceleration, with a 3.7 second to 30 mph. And a welcome upgrade on the BURN-E 2 Max is the 4-piston Logan hydraulic brakes, with bigger pads, an awesome feel, and a 9.7 ft stopping distance from 15 mph.
The scooter's build is also quite handy in tackling hilly and off-road terrain. The hand-welded tubular frame is rock-solid, while the carbon fiber stem is durable and quite efficient in keeping vibrations from your hands. The scooter has the provision to adjust power to the two motors independently, giving more control over your riding. And with the great ergonomics–a large 22-inch x 11.5-inch grip tape-covered deck, a 42.5-inch handlebar height, a massive 5.5-inch clearance, and 27-inch wide handlebars, you can have your pick at the most comfortable stance for your adventurous riding.
Reasons not to buy the NAMI BURN-E 2 Max
- If you want more nimble handling on your hilly rides, in which case the NAMI Klima Max is a great option.
- If you don’t need a performance scooter, but rather one that can handle hills, we’d recommend the Unagi Voyager.
Dualtron X Limited
The Dualtron X Limited is one of the most expensive scooters on the planet–and there’s a lot to love about this beast. At $6999, it’s quite the investment, but once you’ve seen what it can do, it becomes clear why racers and scooter lovers spend as much as they do acquiring the X Limited.
Dualtron X Limited: The best long-range electric scooter
There’s much to love about the X Limited, but top of that list is the scooter’s impressive range. The X Limited has the largest battery, not just on a production scooter, but possibly on any scooter ever made. It is fitted with an 84 V, 5040 Wh primary battery and a 192 Wh smaller battery that powers the scooter's lights. Ridden in max performance mode, expert rider Paul from Rider Guide was able to stay on the road for 3 hours 57 minutes on a hilly range course, totaling 86.4 miles against the manufacturer-cited 100 miles under ideal conditions. Of the best long-range electric scooters, no scooter travels further.
However, you won’t just go far--the Dualtron X Limited is also one of the fastest electric scooters. The scooter has a tested top speed of 61.7 mph, against a claimed 70 mph. It might not reach top speed as fast as Kaabo Wolf scooters or the NAMIs due to its 183 lb weight, but it reaches 30 mph in a decent 4.1 seconds. The weight is also detrimental for its hill climbing–you’ll sacrifice on speed but there’s no hill this scooter won’t eat up.
Ride comfort is excellent on your long voyages. The Dualtron X Limited rolls on some huge 13-inch by 5-inch tubeless tires that nullify road shocks. The tires work with the scooter’s hydraulic shocks that have endless travel and have the X Limited feel like it’s floating on clouds. In addition, you get a solid steering damper to help with high-speed stability. For ride ergonomics, the 14-inch x 19-inch deck is more than sufficient to shuffle your feet; the scooter has an optimal 39.8-inch handlebar height; and the ideal 6.5-inch clearance lets you breeze over obstacles.
You can customize your preferred settings on the app–from multiple speed modes, cruise control settings, zero start, light settings, etc. You get 2 accessory bars in case you need to attach extra equipment. The lighting is phenomenal, and you will be seen night or day. Lastly, you get amazing stopping power from the 4-piston NUTT hydraulic brakes to ensure maximum safety.
Reasons not to buy the Dualtron X Limited
The scooter is insanely expensive. If you’re after range and performance and want to save about $3000, the Dualtron Storm Limited is a close competitor with a 66-mile range.
It is also the heaviest scooter at 183 lbs and is quite bulky, which might pose storage challenges.
GoTrax Flex
GoTrax is the brand for you if you’re looking for a good budget scooter with adequate specs and decent ride quality. They are masters in the under $500 class–despite the company now producing performance scooters–as seen with a scooter like the featured GoTrax Flex.
Gotrax Flex: The best electric scooter for carrying things
The Gotrax Flex is a $349 electric scooter with a twist–it is both a seated scooter and has a basket attachment, dangerously edging on e-bike territory. However, the Flex has no pedals or chain, therefore, it’s an e-scooter. It is one of the best seated electric scooters, especially for riders on a budget, with the right balance of performance and ride comfort on a commuter scooter.
The 36V, 350 W rear motor means you’ll not get your heart racing on this scooter. Riders can expect a top speed of 16 mph, with a slow but steady acceleration curve. The large 14-inch pneumatic tires are good for ride comfort; however, the bigger wheels mean fewer motor turns point-to-point, consequently affecting both acceleration and hill climbing. That said, it’s nimble, with intuitive handling and an ultra-smooth twist throttle, ensuring that the scooter, though underpowered, is fun and easy to ride.
The scooter’s carrying basket, which comes as an included accessory, is a big selling point for people who want to carry groceries, books, or other light items on their scooter without necessarily strapping on a backpack. The basket has a 50 lbs weight capacity and attaches to the rear end of the scooter.
The adjustable seat height means most riders can customize the scooter to their height and liking. The seat is soft and has springs that add a touch of ride comfort, on top of the rear, dual spring setup. Unlike the EMOVE Roadrunner seated scooters, the Flex weighs 48 lbs, which is quite manageable for most adults, and has a folding frame to further ensure portability. For the price, the scooter is quite a steal for best electric scooter for carrying things.
Reasons not to buy the Gotrax Flex
- If you want a little more power, in which case the EMOVE Roadrunner is a good performance option amongst the scooters that can carry cargo.
- If your commute has hilly terrain.
Apollo City Pro 2023
Canadian manufacturer Apollo makes some of the best electric scooters across all categories. They have the entry-level Air models, the City commuters, the Ghost entry-level performance models, the Phantom mid-level performance, and the flagship, high-powered Pro. Year after year, Apollo has been upgrading their models to ensure they stay up to date with the latest tech, and to correct any issues that riders of the current version may be experiencing. They also now offer upgrade kits to bring the previous year’s model to the current version’s standards–giving long-term value to their patrons.
Apollo City Pro 2023: The best electric scooter for riding in the rain
The Apollo City Pro is the best waterproof electric scooter on the market. It’s not the only Apollo scooter with an IP66 water resistance rating; however, it’s the only one that blends price and performance. For perspective, the Apollo Pro 2023 and the Air 2023 are also IP66 rated, but the former costs a whopping $3499, while the latter is a budget, low-powered option.
Most importantly, however, is that this high rating allows the Apollo scooters to be ridden in the rain without the risk of frying the electricals. This is a crucial aspect to consider if you have year-round commuting needs. A waterproof scooter is also much easier to clean–you can gently hose it down without worry.
In wet weather, it’s also important to consider the amount of traction you’re getting from your tires. The Apollo City’s 10-inch tubeless tires provide sufficient traction in slippery weather, which is a quality of air tires over their solid counterparts. The single front and dual spring suspension also offer sufficient compression for a balanced and planted ride experience. Additionally, the scooter has excellent fender coverage that ensures your back is not wet from road spray.
Note: It's still crucial to exercise utmost caution while using the best electric scooter for rain riding due to the increased risks associated with wet conditions. Rain can significantly reduce the road's traction, making it easier to slip, especially on slick surfaces like painted lines or manhole covers. Additionally, braking distances may increase, and visibility can be compromised for riders and other road users.
Apollo excels in quality and design, which is immediately evident upon interaction with the Apollo City Pro electric scooter. The manufacturer has so much faith in the frame's durability that it’s covered for 10,000 Km (6123 miles) under their extensive warranty. Not just that, but Apollo has also tested the easy-to-use thumb throttle through 300,000 cycles, which is 3 times the industry standard–guaranteeing it lasts the life of the scooter. It is also one of the few scooters in its class with dedicated regen braking.
The scooter is just above average in terms of performance. You get a little more kick than you would on a mid-level model, but it’s not trying to outdo performance-oriented scooters in its class like the Kaabo Mantis scooters, the Dualtron Mini, or the Vsett 8 and 9+. The City Pro has a 31.2 mph top speed, with a 3-second acceleration to 15 mph. Additionally, the scooter’s 960 Wh battery capacity is responsible for the City Pro’s 23-mile range. And when it comes to braking, the choice of drum brakes means less grabby braking, stopping in 13.4 ft from a speed of 15 mph.
Collectively, the specs make the Apollo City a perfect all-year scooter, great for rain, and, additionally, the best electric scooter for winter.

Fluid Vista
The Fluid Vista is a 2023 release by Fluid Freeride and is a scooter, unlike many others in the market. It gets accolades for being the best blend of affordability, low maintenance, comfort, efficiency, and portability.
Fluid Vista: The best electric scooter for skilled riders
In 2024, you can get the Fluid Vista for as low as $1199, making an already great bargain scooter even better. The Vista is a single-motor, commuter-focused electric scooter that balances quality, price, and specs. With the Vista, you get a single 1000 W rear motor. It's paired with a very abrupt thumb throttle to give strong acceleration and enthusiastic hill climbing. That said, if you’re not up for that level of power, you can regulate throttle aggression on the app.
The Vista is low-maintenance courtesy of the scooter’s 10-inch solid tires. But you don’t have to worry about ride quality on account of one of the best suspension systems on a solid-tire commuter. The front forks soak in the large bumps well, while the beefy rear spring delivers a cushy ride. Both shocks are adjustable for preload, making the scooter great for people of all weights. The tires, on the other hand, have a grippy tread with great performance on or off-road, and are great for cornering and curving. Jointly, the shocks and tires deliver very good ride comfort.
The scooter’s efficiency as a budget commuter is unmatched. You get a decent top speed of about 31 mph and a 32-mile range on a single charge. It’s a 60 V e-scooter, so you don’t get a speed fall-off near the battery drain, adding to that reliability. Additionally, the scooter comes with a smooth front drum brake and a grabby rear disc brake, which together with the scooter’s regenerative braking have decent stopping power.
The Vista is durably built and with a great spec sheet. You get 25.5-inch wide handlebars that sit 40 inches above the ground. The scooter has a 17.5-inch by 9-inch deck with a grippy rubber mat and tapers towards the rear. And with a 6-inch clearance, there’s almost zero chance of bottoming out. It is IPX5-rated with large fenders that hold up even as a footrest. And for visibility, you get a high-mounted headlight, deck lights, a taillight, and ambient lights that collectively work, but individually tend to be too dim.
Reasons not to buy the Fluid Vista
- The stem is underweighted, hindering the scooter’s handling.
- The throttle is a little jerky even at lower speeds.
Factors to consider when purchasing an electric scooter
There are several factors to consider when choosing the perfect electric scooter for your needs because it ultimately boils down to what works for you. Here are a few things you should bear in mind.
Cost
Scooters can cost as low as $250, or as much as $7000. In 2024, you don’t have to spend money that’s not in your budget to get an e-scooter that meets your needs. There are hundreds of models from good brands--and while you have to manage your expectations when working with a smaller allowance, it doesn’t mean you won’t get a decent scooter.
As you do your research, look up reviews on the cheapest electric scooters or best budget electric scooters if cost is a concern. If not, then proceed to narrow down your sea of options by other factors that are higher in priority.
Performance
Outside of cost, performance is perhaps the most important consideration when purchasing an electric scooter. Under performance, riders will typically look at:
Speed and acceleration
There’s no denying that scooters can be absolutely thrilling to ride. No wonder there’s a whole sport dedicated to seeing how fast riders can go on their e-scooters. The motor configuration determines the scooter’s power, so if extreme performance is a priority, then you should be looking at scooters with powerful dual motors and efficient, high-rated controllers. The Slack Core 920R is currently the fastest electric scooter in 2024, with a tested speed of 90.1 mph and with many of its competitors clocking 60+ mph.
Range
For some people, it’s not enough to go fast, they also want to go far. Long-range scooters are perfect for adventurous people or for anyone who fancies long weekend rides as a means of unwinding.
Currently, the best long-range electric scooter is the Dualtron X Limited going 86.4 miles on a single charge, and it also happens to be the scooter with the largest battery–5040 Wh, with LG 21700 energy-dense cells.
However, most people don’t need that kind of range, and usually, a real-world range of 20 to 40 miles is sufficient for daily commuting. You can power up your scooter at work if you need a little more juice or plug in your scooter before retiring to bed if you need it the next day.
Bottom line, know your intended use for the scooter and let that determine if you’ll splurge on a large battery scooter, or whether an average commuter will suffice.
Braking
Scooters typically rely on three types of braking: mechanical, electronic, and friction braking. The scooter can have one or a combination of these systems. Usually, manufacturers have the freedom to decide their preferred brakes; however, it’s guided by the braking power and efficiency needed.
For instance, most high-powered electric scooters will usually have hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes as they offer the most efficient stopping power. A regular fast electric scooter will have either a disc, drum, or a combination of the two brakes. Disc brakes have a stronger bite and thereby a shorter stopping distance, while drum brakes are less grabby but last longer than their disc counterparts.
Lower-powered scooters can get away with either regenerative electronic or friction brakes, which have longer stopping distances. However, paired with a low top speed, even these ‘less-efficient’ brakes are quite reliable and safe. Additionally, regenerative brakes recharge batteries when applied, adding a few miles to the scooter's range.
Hill climbing
The motor power on an electric scooter determines how aggressively it climbs hills. Dual motors are inherently better hill climbers compared to their single-motor counterparts–as demonstrated by the powerful motors on the Unagi Model One Classic Scooter against higher-rated single-motor scooters like the Dualtron Mini and the Apollo City. That said, even among the dual-motored scooters, some are better hill climbers than their counterparts, like the NAMI Burn-E scooters that are relentless on inclines.
Build quality
You can find some generic $250 scooters on retail sites like Amazon, but there’s a reason any scooter expert worth their salt will advise against reaching for such scooters. The biggest reason is build quality--but why does it matter? And why should you buy a brand-name scooter?
Benefits of brand-name scooters
Brand name scooters are scooters from reliable brands, with a credible history and accessible support. The benefits of brand-name scooters include:
- The manufacturers invest in developing a high-quality product
- You get a decent warranty with your scooter–12 months is the industry standard
- You have a follow-up channel with their customer support in case of issues
- These companies avail spare parts for their e-scooters
- They will have service centers with experts to help sort out any problems
- They don’t cut corners with quality assurance–e.g., with battery safety and structural integrity
- There’s no risk of losing money on a non-existent or counterfeit product when purchasing via the manufacturer’s site
Ride quality
The ride quality is something most people think only matters on longer rides. However, with the poor state of most city tracks, you want an electric scooter that will cushion you from the vibrations experienced when riding over cracks and potholes. It’s also just more fun riding a comfortable scooter and these considerations come in handy if you ever need to do some light off-roading.
Here are a few things to consider when factoring a smooth ride:
Tires
Air-filled tires/ pneumatic tires deliver the most comfortable ride on a scooter–absorbing vibrations experienced from road imperfections. They also offer the best traction on slippery tracks. The trade-off is that they are susceptible to punctures, which is why commuters tend to opt for solid tires.
However, in 2024, many manufacturers have come up with solutions to deliver the best of both worlds like pre-slimed air tires that seal up any potential puncture the minute it occurs. Additionally, we have tubeless tires that are less susceptible to pinch flats, which make up the highest percentage of punctures. Some manufacturers like Unagi addedly opt for honeycomb solid tires, or tires with hollow cutouts that help increase the shock absorption with their air pockets.
Suspension
Not a specification you expect to see on a budget electric scooter, but suspension systems are vital on faster, more powerful scooters. A suspension system works in tandem with the scooter’s tires to ensure that the vehicle can handle bumps, dips, and anything else encountered on the road. Suspension systems range from extremely basic ones to the sophisticated ones we see on scooters like the Dualtron X Limited, the Apollo Pro, and the Segway GT2.
Ergonomic design considerations
You want a scooter with a large deck that doesn’t cramp your feet into an awkward position but rather gives you more than sufficient space to shuffle your feet. Additionally, the deck should be lined with adequate grip tape or a quality rubber mat to ensure a stable ride.
To further guarantee a comfortable stance, the handlebars should sit at an optimal height for you–adjustable handlebars work well for a scooter that’s going to be shared by different riders.
You should also consider things like how firm and stable the grips are, the brightness of the display when riding, the placement of the controls, and your preferred throttle design (twist grip, thumb, trigger, or even roller wheel).
Customization options
To further ensure that you’re enjoying your ride, the scooter should allow certain customizations. Physical customizations include adjustable handlebars, suspension systems, and headlights. Beyond that, we have electric scooter p-settings. These are pre-programmed settings that allow riders to adjust settings such as cruise control and when or how soon it kicks in, zero-start, acceleration and braking intensity, speedometer units, and less common settings like park mode, and traction control etc. P-settings allow you to interact with the scooter within your comfort zone and you can access the p-settings on the scooter’s display or via an app; therefore, it helps if both are thoughtfully designed.
All-weather/ all-terrain riding
Scooters need certain accommodations to be able to ride through conditions like wet weather and off-road trails. The most important factor for riding in the rain is the scooter’s IP rating, which means ingress protection in full, and communicates how well a scooter is protected from dust and water penetration that can impair the functioning of a scooter.
Scooters like the Apollo City and Apollo Pro have an IP66 weatherproof rating, which means you can keep riding in the rain and through dust storms. Of course, this works with other specs like air-filled tires with a good grip to keep from slipping.
All-terrain riding mostly relies on the motor’s power potential to rip through challenging trails, knobby tires that offer the right amount of grip, a large battery for the increased power needs, a good suspension system to smooth out the ride, and good working brakes to moderate downhill riding.
Safety features
Beyond braking, scooters need to have an audible warning for unwary pedestrians or a loud horn if you’re riding alongside other motorists. You also need to be completely visible, therefore, a good lighting system comes in handy. Additionally, have lights that communicate intent, like having a flashing rear brake light and turn signals.
Portability
If your needs center around commuting, then you’ll need to prioritize portability. This considers the weight of the electric scooter–let that be something you can comfortably carry over a distance–and the folding mechanism. Some scooters require tools to fold down–that doesn’t work for quick, on-the-go folding. Prioritize an efficient folding mechanism like the one on Segway commuters, and a solid locking mechanism, preferably with a safety catch to keep the handlebars from coming unhooked in transit or swinging around when carrying.
Accessories
These are the nice-to-have features on scooters. Their absence doesn't take away functionality, but their inclusion does add a sense of unique value. For example, scooters with attachable seat options, carrier baskets, swag lights, Bluetooth music players, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions
How fast do electric scooters go?
Electric scooters are not built alike, and the maximum speed varies from 10 mph all the way to 60 mph+, as seen on the fastest electric scooters. Speed is a preferential factor when selecting an e-scooter, so it’s crucial to have an understanding of your speed needs, your riding skill, and the safety correlation.
Do I need a driver's license to ride an electric scooter?
Different states in the US have different legislation when it comes to scooter use. Majority don’t require riders to have licenses; however, a handful do, and you can check whether the laws in your area require it on our comprehensive guide to e-scooter laws.
What is a last-mile scooter?
A last mile scooter, also known as a first mile scooter, is an electric scooter designed to help you commute to or from another means of transport, e.g., train, bus, or personal vehicle, that, due to certain limitations like parking, lack of a station, leaves you with an otherwise substantial walking distance to or from your destination. These scooters are low-powered since their role does not demand for performance. Additionally, they prioritize portability to allow for easy carrying and storage when not in use.
Why should I choose an electric scooter over an e-bike?
The most significant advantage electric scooters have over e-bikes is their smaller footprint. Even performance scooters occupy less space than e-bikes, making them incredibly portable and convenient to use in various situations. This compact size allows you to easily carry them onto public transportation like metros or buses, effortlessly toss them into the trunk of a car, or conveniently bring them indoors.
Another notable benefit of electric scooters is the effortless riding experience they provide. Unlike e-bikes, which often require pedaling, electric scooters offer a completely motorized journey without much physical exertion.
Lastly, e-scooters are easier to maneuver through heavy traffic, narrow bike lanes, and tight spaces due to their nimble handling and compact size. They are also relatively cheaper than e-bikes and have lower maintenance requirements, making them a more budget-friendly option.
What are the must-have protective gear and accessories?
All-gear-all-the-time. As a rider, you must possess all the vital riding gear necessary to protect you in the event of a crash. It goes without saying that helmets are the most important part of your entire fit when gearing up to ride.
Depending on your riding style and speed, you may opt for a full-face helmet, similar to those worn by motorcyclists, which provides the highest level of protection. For more leisurely rides, a standard bicycle helmet suffices.
In addition to a helmet, it's highly recommended to invest in gloves, knee pads, and elbow pads. These protective gear items help shield your joints from potential impacts, scrapes, and abrasions, minimizing the risk of serious injuries in case you fall.
Visibility is another key factor in staying safe on the road, especially during low-light conditions. To improve your visibility to other road users, consider wearing clothing with reflective strips or a high-visibility reflective vest.
In the U.S., most states don't require a license. For those that do, they usually just ask for a regular driver's license or a learner's permit.
Yes, you can bring an electric scooter on a plane, but it needs to have a lithium battery smaller than 100 watt-hours, which most don't.
Manufacturers advise against riding electric scooters in the rain. The main reasons are: water can fry the electronics, make the ride dangerous, and void your warranty.
